The Neumann KK 120 is a specialized component of the KM A/D Series—Neumann’s most flexible and advanced small-diaphragm modular microphone system. This capsule is a pressure gradient transducer with a bi-directional (figure-8) polar pattern. Unlike dual-diaphragm capsules, the KK 120 uses a single 16 mm diaphragm, allowing all sound field components to reach the diaphragm directly. This results in identical frequency response and sensitivity at $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$, providing a level of sonic symmetry rarely found in stage or studio microphones.
Maximum Flexibility in the KM A/D Ecosystem:
The KK 120 is designed to be paired with either the KM A analog output stage (operating via P48 phantom power) or the KM D digital output stage (AES 42 standard). This modularity allows you to switch between analog and digital workflows without replacing your entire microphone collection.
The Purest Figure-8 Characteristics:
The single-diaphragm construction of the KK 120 ensures that the "null points" at the sides ($90^{\circ}$ and $270^{\circ}$) are exceptionally deep and clean. This makes the KK 120 an indispensable tool for isolating instruments in a complex acoustic environment or for use as the "Side" component in a professional Mid-Side (MS) stereo setup.
Exceptional Transient Response:
Because of its small-diaphragm design and high-purity internal electronics, the KK 120 delivers an ultra-fast transient response. It captures the "crack" of a snare drum, the delicate pluck of a harp, or the intricate details of a classical ensemble with stunning realism and an airy, open top-end.
Stealthy & Remote Configuration:
True to the KM modular concept, the capsule can be detached from the output stage and used at a distance of up to 100 meters (330 ft) via specialized cables (like the LC 4). This allows for virtually invisible placement on film sets, in orchestral pits, or suspended from concert hall ceilings.
Single-Diaphragm Precision: 16 mm diaphragm ensures identical sound pickup from front and rear.
Bi-directional (Figure-8): Ideal for MS-Stereo, Blumlein setups, and high-side rejection.
Modular Compatibility: Threads directly onto KM A (Analog) or KM D (Digital) output stages.
Enormous SPL Handling: Capable of handling up to 150 dB (with preattenuation on the output stage).
Low Self-Noise: Advanced electroacoustic design for a high signal-to-noise ratio.
Discreet Aesthetics: Compact size and classic Nickel finish for a professional, low-profile look.
Mid-Side (MS) Recording: Pair with a KK 184 (Cardioid) for perfect, phase-coherent stereo imaging.
Blumlein Stereo: Use two KK 120 capsules at $90^{\circ}$ for an incredibly natural 360-degree soundstage.
Instrument Isolation: Use the side "nulls" to block out loud neighboring instruments in a studio.
Broadcasting & Film: Small footprint makes it ideal for boom-pole use or hidden placement.
