Direct Digital Connectivity for the Legendary SPL P8 Preamplifier
The SPL ADC8 converter module bridges the gap between pure analog discrete preamplification and digital studio configurations. Designed specifically for the single-rackspace SPL P8, installing this card upgrades the unit from a standalone analog preamplifier into a complete, high-performance digital tracking front-end.
By default, the SPL P8 preamp sends its balanced analog signals out through a primary DB25 connector. The ADC8 card installs directly into the second output slot on the rear panel, replacing the redundant analog output path with a pair of optical TOSLINK digital outputs. This configuration allows tracking engineers to run their main microphone signals digitally into their DAW audio interface over standard optical cables, while keeping the primary DB25 analog output fully active for parallel analog safety recording or downstream monitor mixing.
Premium AKM Conversion Architecture:
The digital translation of the ADC8 is anchored by the highly respected AKM AK5538 24-bit converter chip. Selected for its transparent characteristics and wide dynamic range, this chip captures the fast transient hits, open high-frequency air, and full body generated by the P8’s discrete, transistor-based preamplifier circuits. Operating across single-, double-, and quad-speed sample configurations, it guarantees that every nuanced sonic detail remains uncolored and intact.
Dual ADAT Optical Sockets & Sample Flexibility:
The ADC8 card includes two optical ADAT outputs (TOSLINK) to maintain full 8-channel performance across all sample rates:
Single & Double Speed: Supports baseline 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, as well as high-resolution 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz tracking arrays across the optical spectrum.
Quad Speed / SMUX: Enables mastering-grade 176.4 kHz and 192 kHz sample processing via standard multiplexing rules, using both optical ports to carry all 8 tracking channels efficiently.
Ultra-Stable Quartz Clocking Matrix:
To avoid digital artifacts and phase drift across multi-channel environments, the ADC8 uses highly accurate internal quartz oscillators to generate a clean, low-jitter master clock. The rear-panel Word Clock connection bay houses dedicated BNC input and output ports. As soon as the card detects an external master clock signal from a studio grid or master converter, it automatically disables its internal oscillators to prevent clock collisions or digital noise.
Intelligent Interface Integration:
A dedicated AD Converter button on the hardware interface lets you easily cycle through target sample rates or engage external Word Clock sync (WCLK). Additionally, the card features an integrated 75-ohm termination switch next to the BNC jacks, ensuring proper impedance matching and preventing signal loss when the card acts as the final terminal device in a word clock line.
