The USM 69 i (006974) is essentially two high-performance microphones housed in a single, elegant body. Each of its two K 67 capsules—the same legendary diaphragms found in the U 87 Ai—feeds its own independent amplifier and signal path. This "two-in-one" design allows you to capture intensity stereo signals that are perfectly phase-aligned, ensuring exceptional mono compatibility. With separate rotary switches for each system, you can choose from Omnidirectional, Wide-Angle Cardioid, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, and Figure-8 patterns, providing unmatched flexibility for any acoustic environment.
Stereo Recording Made Simple:
Coincident stereo recording with two separate microphones can be a logistical challenge, requiring precise positioning to avoid phase issues. The USM 69 i eliminates this complexity. Because the two capsules are positioned in extremely close proximity, sound waves reach them simultaneously, generating a pure intensity stereo signal. This makes it incredibly fast to set up for drum overheads, choirs, or orchestral sections, requiring only a single microphone stand and cable.
Unmatched Versatility with 270° Rotation:
The hallmark of the USM 69 i is its rotatable head. The upper capsule system can be pivoted across a 270-degree range, while color markings on the lower system help you identify the exact angle of rotation. This allows for everything from a standard 90° XY setup to more creative MS (Mid-Side) configurations where the lower mic acts as the "Mid" and the upper, rotated figure-8 mic provides the "Side" information.
High-Performance FET Electronics:
Despite its vintage-inspired sound, the USM 69 i features modern FET electronics with an impressively low self-noise of just 13 dB-A. It can handle high sound pressure levels up to 132 dB without distortion, making it safe for loud percussion and brass. Each amplifier section includes an active subsonic filter that protects the output transformers from low-frequency overload caused by wind or structure-borne vibrations.
Built-in Redundancy and Mono Utility:
Because the two systems inside the USM 69 i are completely independent, the microphone offers built-in redundancy for mission-critical broadcast or live recordings. If one channel fails, the other remains fully operational. Furthermore, it can be used as a "backup" mono mic by recording a source with two different polar patterns simultaneously, allowing you to choose the best blend during post-production.
The Neumann Signature Sound:
The USM 69 i provides a sound characterized by a rich midrange and silky top end, very similar to the acclaimed U 87 Ai. This makes it a superb choice not only for music but also for radio drama and audiobook productions where a sense of spatial depth and realism is desired.
One-Point Stereo Solution: Ideal for XY, MS, and Blumlein recording techniques.
Dual Large-Diaphragm Capsules: Uses the same high-quality K 67 capsules as the U 87 Ai.
Five Polar Patterns Per System: Omni, Wide Cardioid, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, Figure-8.
270° Rotatable Head: Allows for precise and flexible stereo imaging adjustments.
Independent Signal Paths: Two separate amplifiers with individual XLR outputs (via XLR-5).
High Reliability: Functional redundancy—ideal for live broadcast and high-stakes sessions.
Transformer-Balanced Output: Provides classic low-end weight and professional signal integrity.
Orchestral & Choral: Captures a massive, balanced soundstage with perfect phase.
Grand Piano & Harp: Ideal for large instruments requiring spatial movement.
Drum Overheads: Provides a cohesive and detailed image of the entire kit.
Radio Drama & Foley: Adds a realistic 3D perspective to spoken word and effects.
Acoustic Ensembles: Perfect for small jazz or folk groups recording in a single pass.
