The USM 69 i mt (006976) combines two complete microphone systems into a single, elegant body. Each of the two K 67 capsules—the same legendary diaphragms found in the world-standard U 87 Ai—feeds its own independent amplifier and signal path. This design allows for perfectly phase-aligned coincident stereo recording, ensuring maximum mono compatibility. With five selectable polar patterns per capsule—Omnidirectional, Wide-Angle Cardioid, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, and Figure-8—the USM 69 i mt offers a level of flexibility and spatial precision that is unmatched in the studio.
Perfect Phase, Every Time:
Coincident stereo recording with two separate microphones can be a logistical nightmare. The USM 69 i mt simplifies the process by housing both capsules in one unit. Because the capsules are positioned in extremely close proximity, sound waves arrive at both simultaneously, creating a pure intensity stereo signal. This makes the USM 69 i mt the fastest and most reliable way to set up for drum overheads, choirs, or orchestral spot-miking using only one stand and one cable.
Creative Freedom with 270° Rotation:
The hallmark of the USM 69 i mt is its rotatable upper capsule system. It can be pivoted across a 270-degree range, with clear color markings on the lower section to help you identify the exact recording angle. This allows for seamless transitions between a standard 90° XY setup and complex MS (Mid-Side) configurations, where the lower capsule captures the "Mid" signal and the upper, rotated figure-8 capsule provides the "Side" information.
High-Performance FET Electronics:
Engineered for the most demanding sessions, the USM 69 i mt features modern FET circuitry with an exceptionally low self-noise of just 13 dB-A. It handles high sound pressure levels up to 132 dB without distortion, making it safe for loud brass, percussion, or high-gain cabinets. Each amplifier section includes an active subsonic filter to protect the output transformers from low-frequency overload caused by wind or vibrations.
Redundancy for Mission-Critical Tasks:
The two systems inside the USM 69 i mt are completely independent. This provides built-in redundancy for live broadcasts—if one channel were to fail, the other remains fully operational. Furthermore, it can be used as a "safety" mono mic by recording a single source with two different polar patterns simultaneously, allowing you to choose the perfect blend in post-production.
The "mt" Professional Finish:
The Matte Black finish is specifically chosen for film sets, television studios, and broadcast suites. It is non-reflective, ensuring that studio lights do not cause distracting glares on camera. Handcrafted in Germany, the USM 69 i mt delivers the iconic "Neumann Sound"—a rich midrange and silky top end—while adding a true three-dimensional perspective.
One-Point Stereo Solution: Ideal for XY, MS, and Blumlein recording techniques.
Dual K 67 Large-Diaphragm Capsules: The same high-quality capsules found in the U 87 Ai.
Five Polar Patterns Per System: Omni, Wide Cardioid, Cardioid, Hypercardioid, Figure-8.
270° Rotatable Head: Precise and flexible stereo imaging adjustments.
Independent Signal Paths: Two separate amplifiers with individual outputs via XLR-5.
Operational Safety: Functional redundancy—perfect for live and high-stakes sessions.
Transformer-Balanced Output: Classic low-end weight and professional signal integrity.
Orchestral & Choral: Captures a massive, phase-stable soundstage with ease.
Grand Piano & Harp: Captures the full spatial movement and depth of large instruments.
Drum Overheads: Provides a cohesive, detailed, and phase-perfect image of the kit.
Radio Drama & Foley: Adds a realistic 3D perspective to voices and sound effects.
