The SPL GainStation 1 addresses the core challenge of modern digital audio workflows—capturing tracks with enough analog depth and transient speed to stand out in a digital mix. Built around custom discrete components rather than industrial IC chips, this highly compact desktop preamp features two separate amplification stages that can be blended to taste: a hyper-transparent Class-A solid-state stage and a high-voltage 12AX7 LPS tube stage.
Designed for free desktop placement close to the source or inside a specialized 3U multi-unit rack frame, the GainStation 1 offers pristine acoustic amplification, smart dynamic limiting, and selectable input options to act as the ultimate front-end tracking rig for vocals, guitars, and passive instruments.
Hybrid Preamplification Architecture (Class-A meets Tube):
The GainStation 1 utilizes a true hybrid preamp block designed to give you total control over your sonic signature. It incorporates custom DMPA (Discrete Mic Pre Amp) operational amplifiers running on a high-voltage $\pm$30V DC internal power grid (60V rails)—twice the operating voltage of standard audio electronics.
Clean Gain Stage: Running in pure Class-A mode, the output transistors remain constantly conductive, preventing crossover distortion. Boasting a blazing slew rate of over 100 V/µs (up to 200 V/µs peak tracking), it reproduces ultra-fast transient peaks with linear accuracy.
Tube Gain Stage: Equipped with a premium 12AX7 LPS tube running at an authentic high voltage and coupled with high-grade WIMA MKP foil capacitors (2.2 µF) to keep bass response warm, tight, and clear. Turning this control up gradually introduces pleasant even-order overtones and smooth, musical saturation.
Discrete Hi-Z and Line Input Section:
The dedicated instrument input features a custom-built impedance converter using a low-noise field-effect transistor (FET) running in Class-A mode. Presenting a massive 1 M$\Omega$ input resistance, it handles high-impedance instrument pickups effortlessly without tone-sucking loading effects, transforming the GainStation 1 into a top-tier studio DI box for acoustic guitars, electric bass, and synthesizers.

Integrated Peak/FET Limiter: A built-in analog protection limiter with an internal threshold set at +20 dBu, guarding downstream digital audio converters from clipping while adding a smooth sense of compression on high-transient sources.
