Product Overview

Premium Multi-Channel Front-End Expansion for Modern Digital Audio Interfaces

The SPL P8 + ADC addresses the demand for a compact, ultra-clean multi-channel preamplifier that integrates into digital studio networks. While most preamps in this class use standard integrated circuits (ICs) that mask fine sonic details, the P8 employs a strictly discrete transistor layout across all eight identical channels.

This specialized ADC configuration ships with the premium SPL ADC8 card pre-installed. This setup lets you send eight channels of pristine analog audio directly into your interface's optical ADAT ports via dual TOSLINK connections, bypassing noisy internal interface preamps entirely. Whether tracking full drum kits, complex acoustic arrays, or live orchestral setups, the P8 + ADC acts as an uncolored analog gateway to your DAW.

Product Description

100% Discrete, IC-Free Transistor Preamplification:

The preamplifier section features eight identical, purely discrete channels built using individual transistors instead of mass-produced operational amplifiers. Driven by a high-grade dual bipolar NPN transistor package, the input stages exhibit an exceptionally open, neutral soundstage with low self-noise. This individual-component structure allows the preamps to capture fast transient velocities cleanly, functioning as an authentic console front-end that stays entirely out of the way of the source material.

The Acclaimed AKM AK5538 Converter Engine:

The pre-installed digital module centers around the highly praised AKM AK5538 24-bit A/D converter chip, known for its ability to reproduce micro-details across transient peaks. The converter supports single-, double-, and quad-speed sampling rates seamlessly:

  • Single & Double Speed: Delivers a full 8-channel output at up to 96 kHz over the dual optical ports.

  • Quad Speed (S/MUX): Delivers 4 channels of premium conversion at up to 192 kHz.

The sampling rate is adjusted right from the front panel using a dedicated selector button with helpful green LED rate indicators.

Parallel Analog and Digital Output Streaming:

The P8 + ADC offers incredible downstream routing flexibility. While the pre-installed converter card occupies the second output slot to feed your interface digitally via ADAT, the primary analog DB25 output remains fully active. This means the unit simultaneously streams eight channels of digital audio via TOSLINK and eight channels of balanced line-level analog audio via the DB25 port. This built-in hardware splitter setup lets you feed a primary DAW interface digitally while running a parallel analog mix to a backup tape machine or hardware monitoring deck with no signal loss.

Surgical Control Per Channel:

The sleek front panel provides an uncompromised control layout for every channel, featuring premium components and jewel-toned, backlit hardware switches that ensure click-free and pop-free activation:

  • Analog Gain Control: A smooth-milled rotary pot providing a broad gain curve from +8 dB up to +62 dB, with enough clean gain to support passive ribbon mics.

  • -20 dB PAD Switch: Instantly drops the input level, extending the maximum input level handling up to +33.5 dBu—ideal for hot percussion or explosive brass sections.

  • 80 Hz High-Pass Filter: A precise 6 dB/octave analog low-cut filter to eliminate proximity boom, floor vibrations, and sub-bass ambient rumble.

  • Phase Inversion ($\emptyset$): Instantly flips signal polarity by 180° to guarantee cohesive phase correlation when balancing multi-mic setups.

  • +48V Phantom Power: Supplies clean, independent, ripple-free current to demanding studio condenser microphones.

Key Features

  • PRE-INSTALLED ADC8 MODULE: Arrives factory-configured with an 8-channel 24-bit/192 kHz ADAT converter card using premium AKM converter chips.

  • 100% DISCRETE TRANSISTOR CIRCUITS: All eight preamps utilize an IC-free, individual-component design for transparent and uncolored signal amplification.

  • MIRRORED ANALOG & DIGITAL OUTPUTS: Features dual optical TOSLINK ports and a balanced DB25 socket running simultaneously to split signals without external hardware.

  • ROCK-SOLID BNC WORD CLOCK: High-accuracy quartz oscillators handle incoming and outgoing master clocking with a switchable 75 $\Omega$ BNC termination button.

  • POP-FREE TRANSISTOR SWITCHING: Front-panel buttons activate phantom power, PAD, phase, and HPF silently without audio pops.

  • COMPREHENSIVE LED INPUT METERING: Includes three-stage visual meters per channel displaying -25 dBu (Green), 0 dBu (Yellow), and Clip/Overload warnings (Red).

  • THROUGH-HOLE GERMAN ENGINEERING: Hand-built in Germany utilizing premium through-hole components mounted on robust internal circuit boards.

  • USB FIRMWARE SERVICE PORT: Dedicated rear-panel USB-B port ensures simple maintenance and easy operating system updates for the digital card.
