The Universal Audio 1176LN is the definitive, industry-standard solid-state Field Effect Transistor (FET) limiting amplifier, engineered to deliver lightning-fast, aggressive dynamic control and rich analog character for world-class recording and mixing studios. Hand-wired in the USA to the exact historic specifications of Bill Putnam Sr.’s legendary D and E revisions, the 1176LN is celebrated for its ultra-fast attack times—adjustable down to an astonishing 20 microseconds—making it the ultimate tool for grabbing harsh transients on drums, vocals, aggressive bass lines, and guitars. Featuring the iconic push-button ratio selectors, a glowing vintage VU meter, and custom-wound Schumacher output transformers, the 1176LN injects punch, grit, and unmistakable presence into your signal path. Whether doing subtle leveling or pushed into its famous explosive "All-Button" room mode, this classic hardware limiter remains unmatched in its ability to make tracks stand completely forward in any modern mix.

Product Overview

The Legendary Transient Shredder and Harmonic Saturation Engine

If the optical LA-2A is the king of smooth, transparent leveling, the Universal Audio 1176LN is the absolute master of speed, punch, and attitude. Originally released in 1967 by UA founder Bill Putnam Sr., the 1176 marked a massive technological shift as the first true solid-state peak limiter to utilize a Field Effect Transistor as a voltage-controlled variable resistor. Today, Universal Audio continues to hand-build this legendary unit in Scotts Valley, California, preserving the exact discrete, true-to-era circuit design that has defined the punchy drum and vocal sounds of rock, pop, and hip-hop for decades.

The 1176LN does not use a standard compression threshold knob. Instead, the compression depth is controlled by driving the Input level knob against a fixed internal threshold, while the Output knob acts as a master makeup gain stage. This interface design forces you to rely on your ears, letting you balance raw compression depth against the rich, musical harmonic distortion generated by the internal Class-A line output amplifier circuit. From gentle acoustic leveling to crushing parallel drum shells, the 1176LN adds an organic energy to your tracks that software simply cannot mirror.

Product Description

Lightning-Fast FET Response and Discrete Class-A Performance:

The heart of the 1176LN’s iconic punch is its ultra-fast solid-state FET sidechain. While optical limiters require milliseconds to respond, the 1176LN can clamp down on a transient spike in just 20 microseconds (0.00002 seconds) at its fastest setting. This incredible speed makes it perfect for taming the unpredictable transient spikes of aggressive heavy rock vocal tracks, sharp snare hits, and slap bass lines without letting any unwanted peaks clip your converters.

The audio signal path itself is a masterclass in discrete component engineering. Built strictly around Putnam's legendary Revision D and E architectures, the 1176LN features an entirely discrete, solid-state electronics path paired with a custom LN (Low Noise) design that keeps the background noise floor impressively quiet. The final output is driven by a meticulous reproduction of the original Schumacher output transformer, which saturates beautifully when pushed hard, adding thick, solid lower-midrange frequencies and a glistening top-end presence.

The Iconic Ratio Array and Famous "All-Button Mode":

On the right side of the front panel sits the historic four-button ratio matrix, offering choices of 4:1 and 8:1 for standard compression duties, and 12:1 and 20:1 for strict peak limiting. However, the most famous feature of this matrix is a happy hardware accident known to engineers worldwide as "All-Button Mode" (or British Mode).

By physically pushing all four ratio buttons down simultaneously, the 1176LN's internal bias points shift dramatically. The compression curve behaves erratically, the attack and release times accelerate, and the unit introduces a heavy, musical distortion lag. This legendary mode creates an explosive, pump-and-breathe response that instantly transforms clean drum overheads into a massive, ambient rock room sound, while lending an intense, in-your-face grit to rock and rap vocals.

Premium Built Heritage and Classic Interface Ergonomics:

True to its mid-century analog heritage, the 1176LN features an inverse-behaving time layout where turning the Attack and Release pots clockwise makes the response faster, not slower (1 is slowest, 7 is fastest). The beautifully backlit analog VU meter can be toggled to show real-time Gain Reduction or monitor output levels at +4 dBu or +8 dBu reference standards. Constructed within a rugged 2U steel chassis with a gorgeous anodized black brushed aluminum faceplate, the 1176LN represents an investment-grade cornerstone piece of analog hardware engineered to run reliably in high-end tracking rooms for decades.
