The 1176LN does not use a standard compression threshold knob. Instead, the compression depth is controlled by driving the Input level knob against a fixed internal threshold, while the Output knob acts as a master makeup gain stage. This interface design forces you to rely on your ears, letting you balance raw compression depth against the rich, musical harmonic distortion generated by the internal Class-A line output amplifier circuit.
