The Universal Audio UAFX 1176 Studio Compressor packs the world’s most famous Field Effect Transistor (FET) limiting amplifier into a compact, stage-ready stompbox. Powered by UA's class-leading DSP modeling, this pedal delivers a component-level recreation of the legendary 1176LN hardware rack unit that has anchored elite studio console center sections since 1967. Featuring three distinct compression modes—including the legendary, explosive "All-Buttons-In" British mode—and the ability to run independent parallel compression, the 1176 pedal provides guitarists, bassists, and producers with the definitive studio punch, lightning-fast attack, and rich harmonic grit of a hit record in a streamlined, single-footswitch footprint.

Product Overview

The Definitive Sound of Studio Dynamic Punch, Optimized for Your Pedalboard

From Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Michael Jackson and modern indie rock records, the classic 1176 limiting amplifier is arguably the most recorded dynamic processor in music history. Celebrated for its lightning-fast attack time, mid-forward presence, and the musical way it thickens up a signal when pushed, it is an indispensable tone-shaping tool. The Universal Audio UAFX 1176 Studio Compressor brings that exact analog rackmount mojo straight onto your pedalboard.

Rather than offering a generic digital compression curve, this stompbox runs an exact mathematical simulation of the original Class-A solid-state hardware circuitry and custom transformers. It captures how the circuit sags, compresses, and adds harmonic saturation as you drive the input stage, providing a studio-mix finish that glues your performance together perfectly.

Product Description

Three Flexible Processing Modes and Parallel Compression:

The UAFX 1176 features a dedicated 3-way Switch on the faceplate, letting you instantly change the pedal's internal routing and compression behaviors:

  • Single Mode: Recreates the classic, highly versatile workflow of a single 1176 rack unit. It provides transparent dynamic leveling, added sustain, and a tight, percussive snap that is ideal for clean funk lines, country chicken-picking, or smoothing out dynamic acoustic guitars.

  • Dual Mode (Serial): Digitally stacks two entirely independent 1176 compression engines in a serial chain. This lets you run a fast-catching front compressor to tame aggressive transients while the second engine provides thick, endless sustain—replicating the legendary studio tracking trick used by Lowell George and guitar hero Jimmy Page.

  • Sustain Mode: Configures the dual internal engines to create a highly musical, low-noise sustain block. It keeps your guitar notes ringing out cleanly for extended periods without raising the background noise floor or compressing your core picking transients too harshly.

To keep your playing lively and expressive, the pedal includes a dedicated Parallel Mix knob. This allows you to blend your completely uncompressed dry instrument signal with the squashed, heavily compressed 1176 path, retaining your raw dynamic pick attack while enjoying the massive body and sustain of the studio limiting engine.

True All-Buttons-In "British Mode" Crushing:

By turning the Ratio control to its maximum setting, the pedal engages the famous "All-Buttons-In" mode (often called British Mode). This emulates the chaotic, distorted, and highly aggressive character achieved when recording engineers physically jammed down all four ratio buttons on the vintage rack unit. The results are explosive: transient attacks get aggressively mashed, compression ratios shoot between 12:1 and 20:1, and the unit adds a thick, beautiful harmonic distortion that adds instant rock-and-roll attitude to slide guitars, dirty bass lines, and synthesizer tracking.

Studio Controls and Routing Integrity:

The hardware knob layout perfectly maps out the traditional 1176 workflow. The Input knob controls both your threshold level and how hard you drive the preamp stage, the Output knob manages your makeup gain, and independent Attack and Release controls let you fine-tune the envelope response with extreme accuracy. Like the original hardware, the attack time is lightning-fast, adjustable in microseconds to instantly clip or shape heavy transients.

Built for clean routing, the 1176 pedal features an internal Analog Dry-Through circuit path to keep your dry signal untouched by digital conversions. The rear-panel hardware slider lets you switch between True Bypass (for an uncompromised, clean path when off) and Buffered Bypass (which maintains your high frequencies over long cable runs and complex boards).

Key Features

  • AUTHENTIC 1176LN RACK EMULATION: Component-level digital recreation of the iconic late-1960s Class-A FET limiting amplifier hardware.

  • THREE DYNAMIC COMPRESSION MODES: Onboard toggle selects between Single (Classic), Dual (Stacked Series), and Sustain configurations.

  • LEGENDARY BRITISH MODE: Engage the famous "All-Buttons-In" ratio setting for explosive compression and rich harmonic overdrive.

  • PARALLEL COMPRESSION MIX: Dedicated blend control mixes dry and wet signals together to retain attack clarity alongside massive sustain.

  • MICROSECOND ATTACK TIMES: Ultra-fast envelope controls allow you to clamp down instantly on sharp peaks to tighten up loose dynamics.

  • FAITHFUL INPUT PREAMP CLIPPING: Input knob pushes the virtual solid-state transformer path into musical analog saturation.

  • SWITCHABLE TRUE / BUFFERED BYPASS: Select between absolute true mechanical relay bypass or a pristine buffered signal path via the rear panel.

  • PURE ANALOG DRY-THROUGH: Dry instrument signal remains entirely in the analog domain to protect dynamic tone integrity.
