Product Overview

The Neumann KM 183 is the omnidirectional cornerstone of the "Series 180"—a range of non-modular miniature microphones that offer world-class engineering at an attractive price point. Finished in elegant Satin Nickel, the KM 183 is the successor to the legendary KM 83. It features a frequency-independent polar pattern and a transformerless circuit design that ensures a pristine, uncolored signal path, even when driving very long cable runs.

Product Description

The Mastery of Diffuse-Field Equalization:

In large acoustic environments like cathedrals or concert halls, high-frequency energy is naturally absorbed by the air. The KM 183 is specifically equalized to compensate for this. While it exhibits a +7 dB treble boost at 10 kHz when used for close-miking (free field), this boost results in a perfectly flat and natural response when placed further back in the "diffuse field." This ensures that your room recordings sound vibrant, detailed, and life-like rather than dark or distant.

Unlimited Low-End Accuracy:

Because the KM 183 is a true pressure transducer, it has no "proximity effect"—the bass response does not increase as you move closer to the source. Furthermore, its low-frequency extension is theoretically limitless, accurately capturing frequencies down to 20 Hz and below. This makes it an indispensable tool for recording the deep resonance of pipe organs, double basses, and the complex low-end harmonics of a 9-foot concert grand piano.

State-of-the-Art Transformerless Circuitry:

The KM 183 utilizes the innovative transformerless technology found in Neumann's high-end KM 100 system. This results in a massive dynamic range of 127 dB and an incredibly low self-noise of only 13 dB-A. The microphone can handle extreme Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) up to 140 dB without distortion, making it equally capable of recording a delicate flute or high-velocity percussion.

Compact & Visually Unobtrusive:

With a diameter of only 22 mm and a length of 107 mm, the KM 183 is designed to stay out of the spotlight. Its slim profile is ideal for television sets, film scoring stages, and live orchestral broadcasts where the presence of large microphones would be a visual distraction.
