Redefining the Boundaries of Stereo Audio Shaping
The SPL BiG addresses a universal challenge in contemporary mixing and mastering: creating a massive, enveloping stereo image without losing the punch, weight, and center-focus of the mix. Standard digital stereo-widening plug-ins or traditional M/S processors often achieve width by shifting phase relationships. While this makes the sides sound wider, it frequently introduces phase cancellation, causing critical center elements like vocals, bass, and kick drums to disappear when played back on mono speaker systems.
Designed by analog pioneer Wolfgang Neumann, BiG breaks this limitation through a completely unique, hardware-driven signal manipulation method. Instead of standard matrixing, it derives a specialized difference signal from the input, shapes it through an interactive analog filter network, and blends it back into the primary signal path using a proprietary mixing stage. The result is a wider, deeper, and more immersive acoustic field that translates beautifully across anything from club PAs to mono smartphone speakers.
Proprietary Non-M/S Analog Filtering Matrix:
At the heart of BiG is an all-analog, state-variable filtering array. Rather than altering the absolute levels of the side channel, the circuit alters the frequency-dependent phase characteristics of uncorrelated stereo information. Because the expansion is governed by an analog passive network, it introduces no digital latency or software-induced artifacts. Every critical component is mounted onto the internal circuit boards using traditional Through-Hole Technology, ensuring the shortest, best-sounding signal path possible.
Interactive Three-Parameter Sound Stage Controls:
BiG streamlines complex spatial engineering into three highly musical control elements:
Range Pot: Selects the precise frequency zone designated for spatial expansion. The frequency control sweeps smoothly from a high-frequency focus at 6 kHz (fully counter-clockwise) down to a broadband setting of 500 Hz (fully clockwise).
Stage Pot: Adjusts the bandwidth, slope, and perceived depth placement of the frequency selection. Turning it toward "Back" creates a tighter, more intimate panoramic spread, while sweeping it forward toward "Front" projects the selected frequencies out into an immersive, multi-dimensional plane.
BIGNESS Pot: The center jewel of the front panel is a massive, un-stepped master rotary knob that determines the exact intensity of the stereo image shaping. It seamlessly blends the processed spatial signal back into the master output stage to scale your track from subtle width to a massive wall of sound.
Signature Iron Compressor Passive Bass Boost:
To prevent ultra-wide stereo processing from thinning out your low end, BiG includes an integrated master EQ subsection. Via a front-panel BASS toggle switch, users can engage a passive, bell-shaped bass booster. This circuit is modeled directly after the renowned AirBass matrix found on the flagship SPL IRON Mastering Compressor, adding a fixed, cohesive 2 dB lift at 45 Hz to lock down a thick, heavy low-frequency foundation.
NAMM TEC AWARD-WINNING TECH: Employs SPL's acclaimed, proprietary analog stereo stage technology, named the top hardware signal processor of 2024.
PERFECT MONO COMPATIBILITY: Widens stereo fields using an advanced difference network that collapses cleanly back to mono without phase cancellations.
THROUGH-HOLE COMPONENT DESIGN: Hand-selected, premium discrete components are anchored using through-hole mounting for pristine audiophile performance.
SURGICAL RANGE SELECTION: State-variable filter sweeps from 500 Hz to 6 kHz to target specific instrument groups or full master buses.
FRONT-TO-BACK STAGE PLACEMENT: Interactive Stage control alters filter slopes to shift audio elements forward or backward in the acoustic depth field.
AIRBASS LOW-END ENHANCEMENT: Built-in passive sub-bass switch adds warmth and chest-thumping power derived from the SPL IRON compressor.
TACTILE HARDWARE ON/BYPASS: True hardwire bypass switch enables instantaneous A/B comparison between processed and raw stereo signals.
DOUBLE-SLOT 500 SERIES LAYOUT: Standard double-width design fits smoothly into any standard VPR-compliant 500 series rack enclosure.
