Double the Precision, Half the Size — Classic SPL De-Essing for Your Lunchbox
The SPL DeS brings the industry-standard, award-winning sibilance control of SPL's full-sized rack units directly into the ultra-flexible 500 series format. Standard de-essers often rely on narrow-band compressors that slam down the overall high-frequency gain, causing vocals to pump, muffle, or develop an unnatural lisp.
The DeS module completely bypasses this limitation. Utilizing a specialized Dual-Band processing array, it splits sibilance monitoring into two independent registers that operate in series. Handcrafted in Germany, the DeS module adapts perfectly to real-time performance fluctuations, making it the ultimate frontend tool for vocal tracking chains, broadcast voiceovers, and high-end mixing matrices.
Advanced Dual-Band Series Processing Layout:
The core innovation of the DeS is its dual-stage filtering engine, which separates sibilant tracking into highly specialized frequency sectors:
Lo-S Control (Low-Band De-Esser): Placed first in the serial signal chain, this stage targets the thick, lower-register sibilant zone. It acts as the primary filter, reshaping the signal before feeding it into the upper stage.
Hi-S Control (High-Band De-Esser): Focuses precisely on a narrow high-frequency center at 11.2 kHz (with a 3 kHz bandwidth), effortlessly pulling out sharp, piercing sibilant whistles and high-end condenser microphone grit.
Proprietary Auto-Threshold and Level-Independent Gain:
With traditional compressor-style de-essers, the intensity of sibilance reduction drops if a performer moves away from the microphone, causing "S" sounds to suddenly bleed back into the mix. The SPL DeS solves this through its intelligent Auto-Threshold matrix. The circuit monitors the relative ratio of sibilance rather than absolute input volume. Whether a singer delivers a quiet whisper or an explosive chorus, the de-essing intensity remains perfectly constant, eliminating the need for continuous input gain tracking.
Acoustic Erasure via Phase Cancellation:
Instead of pulling down frequencies with an equalizer, the DeS generates a mirror-image, phase-inverted version of the sibilant noise and mixes it back into the primary audio path. This allows the unwanted "S" sound to cancel itself out passively and transparently. Because neighboring frequencies are left completely untouched, your vocal track retains its original air, open character, and top-end clarity.
500 SERIES SINGLE-SLOT DESIGN: Packs SPL's legendary analog sibilance processor into a space-saving single-slot module for 500 series racks.
SERIES DUAL-BAND CAPABILITY: Employs independent Lo-S and Hi-S processing blocks connected in series for deep surgical detailing.
REVOLUTIONARY PHASE CANCELLATION: De-esses via phase inversion subtraction, wiping out harshness while leaving vocal tone natural and open.
INTELLIGENT AUTO-THRESHOLD: Automatically balances thresholds during input volume shifts, ensuring consistent reduction at any microphone distance.
MALE & FEMALE VOICING LOGIC: Direct toggle switch shifts the Low-Band detection center to match vocal characteristics (6.4 kHz for Male, 7.6 kHz for Female).
INDEPENDENT BAND ENGAGEMENT: Individual on/off controls for both the High and Low bands let you isolate or combine the processing stages.
REAL-TIME REDUCTION LEDs: Dedicated SR LEDs provide clear visual feedback by tracking the exact level of sibilance reduction applied.
ELECTRONICALLY BALANCED SIGNAL PATH: Premium internal components deliver an extended 10 Hz – 100 kHz linear frequency response with minimal distortion.
