The Neumann KK 133 (008639) is a high-performance diffuse-field equalized omnidirectional condenser capsule featuring a titanium diaphragm and a detachable sound diffraction sphere. Based on the legendary acoustic design of the Neumann M 50, it delivers linear bass response down to 20 Hz and increasing directivity in higher frequencies, making it the world-standard choice for Decca Tree and orchestral recording.

Product Overview

The Neumann KK 133 is a specialized pressure transducer within the KM A/D modular series. It is a masterpiece of audio engineering that bridges the gap between the classic "Golden Age" of recording and modern modular flexibility. Designed to be paired with the KM A (Analog) or KM D (Digital) output stages, the KK 133 is unique for its use of a titanium diaphragm and its distinctive SBK 133 sound diffraction sphere, which acoustically modifies its pickup pattern to provide unparalleled precision in large-scale acoustic environments.

Product Description

Inspired by the Legendary M 50:

The KK 133 is built upon the technical heritage of the legendary Neumann M 50 and its successor, the M 150 Tube. Its ultra-thin titanium diaphragm is spaced only a few microns from a titanium backplate, resulting in an incredibly fast transient response. This material choice ensures maximum durability and long-term acoustic stability, even in varying humidity and temperature conditions.

Innovative Sound Diffraction Sphere:

The included 40 mm sound diffraction sphere is the secret to the KK 133's success in orchestral miking. When attached, it creates a gentle increase in sound pressure for mid-to-high frequencies. This causes the microphone to become more directional (like a cardioid) at high frequencies, while maintaining the perfect, non-proximity-effect bass response of a true omnidirectional pressure transducer. This allows for pinpoint stereo imaging within a lush, ambient field.

Diffuse-Field Equalization:

The capsule is diffuse-field equalized, meaning it has a flat frequency response in a reverberant sound field. In a free-field (direct) environment, it exhibits a deliberate treble boost of 4–5 dB at 12 kHz. This ensures that recordings of large ensembles in concert halls sound natural, brilliant, and detailed, rather than dull or distant.

Modular Freedom (Analog & Digital):

As part of the KM A/D system, the KK 133 capsule is passive and can be swapped between the KM A (analog P48) and KM D (digital AES 42) output stages. This modularity allows the capsule to be used remotely (up to 100 meters away) using extension cables, making it ideal for high-hanging Decca Trees or discreet placement in film scoring stages.

Key Features

  • Titanium Capsule Construction: Ultra-fast transient response and extreme durability.

  • Detachable 40 mm Sphere: Increases high-frequency directivity for better spatial imaging.

  • Diffuse-Field Equalized: Specifically tuned for distant miking in reverberant spaces.

  • No Proximity Effect: Linear bass transmission down to 20 Hz, regardless of distance.

  • Modular Compatibility: Threads directly onto KM A (Analog) and KM D (Digital) output stages.

  • High SPL Handling: Distortion-free performance up to 148 dB (with output stage pad).

Applications

  • Decca Tree Recording: The primary choice for the "Left-Center-Right" array in orchestral scoring.

  • Orchestral Spot-Miking: Captures soloists with a natural brilliance that cuts through the mix.

  • Organ & Choir Recording: Provides deep, authentic low-end and an airy, celestial top-end.

  • A-B Stereo Miking: Creates a wide, immersive soundstage for classical ensembles.
